Mendlesham Charities

Both the Mendlesham Charities are for the benefit of Mendlesham residents only

Mendlesham Educational Foundation

was established by the will of Henry Jessop in 1516, and consists of a body of trustees administering various charitable funds. The trustees’ duties are under obligation set out in a scheme updated in 1983, i.e. they are answerable to the Charity Commissioners.

The Charities assets are invested in a wide portfolio of bonds, trusts, charity fixed interest and deposit accounts. The trust also owns land and property including the Old School Room which is administered as a public amenity.

Income from the assets is used in accordance with the scheme to benefit students under 25 years for educational needs. Students in further education at college or university, grants to the Primary School to enhance teaching arrangements, and payments to various youth groups in the village are currently beneficiaries.

Mendlesham Church and Town Estate Charity

was established by the will of Robert Cake in 1473, and consists of a body of trustees administering various charitable funds. The trustees’ duties are under obligation set out in a scheme updated in 1983, i.e. they are answerable to the Charity Commissioners.

The Charities assets are invested in a wide portfolio of bonds, trusts, charity fixed interest and deposit accounts. The trust also owns land.

Income from the assets are divided; half of the income applied towards the repair, electricity, heating, insurance and upkeep of the fabric of the Parish Church of Mendlesham; the other half of the income goes to the Charitable Account to assist individual sick and needy parishioners. Grants go towards sick visiting expenses, charity distributions and funeral expenses. All payments to individuals are strictly confidential. Annual payments are also made to Mendlesham Over 60’s Club and the Mendlesham Over 65’s and Disabled Party.

The administration of both Trusts is done by a committee of nominated and co-opted members and can be contacted via the clerk:
